Who let the smoke out?

29 Dec

Sheesh. In a never ending battle to keep entropy from taking over my life, I now have a new project. Somehow, late yesterday morning, something began to smoke in my amplifier. My wife tapped me on my shoulder while I was engaged in my daily CW practice and suggested I was in some sort of Allan Bradley vortex and that if I didn’t do something about it she would be forced to place a call to the fire department. You see smoldering insulation in the closed confines of my heated home in winter time creates an assault on one’s olfactory senses that leaves little to the imagination. Sigh. Put off the sked, take out the screws and begin the process of sniffing and looking for signs of stressed out components. I always run my amp at half power or less so I certainly was not in some death match attempting to laser a pileup into another galaxy far far away. I attribute this sort of thing to age-pure and simple. My once retired and modified recycled bargain amplifier has finally become what I bought it for-a project. Unfortunately, it appears the transformer is overheating-always a bad sign. The good news is someone purchased Peter Dahl and so replacement parts are likely being made and available. Now the hard part-to figure out exactly what is going on.

Power Supply area LK500

This Stinks!

It may be 30 Meters from now until I get the amp running again. But that is not a bad thing.

Thanks for reading my Blog. Best, Chas  W5PG
