As long time readers are aware, I am prone to writing a humorous piece from time to time. With that in mind and a tongue firmly planted in my right cheek I offer the following.
It has recently come to my attention that the practice of Morse Telegraphy prevents the onset of dementia or Alzheimer’s in the craft’s practitioners. It is especially absent in those practitioners that perform what is known as “Head Copy”, or real time translation of received audio coded messages into mental comprehension without writing anything down.
End of joke.
The above paragraph may seem incredible to some and impossible to others. However, it is offered as humor only half heartedly. Now it is possible that some person reading this may know someone that ended up with dementia of some ilk and also practiced at CW, however in my personal experience I have never encountered such a person. If anyone that happens across this concept has personal experience with Morse proficiency and dementia I would love to hear from you. I have been searching in vain to establish some sort of connection between various forms of dementia and intense brain activity such as encountered in “Head Copy”. Perhaps a poll here might be appropriate. However, the pool of potential candidates is growing smaller by the day so time is important. And of course, everyone knows that SSB has no such therapeutic value. 🙂
Thanks for reading. Best, Chas W7MAP/5
